How to Live more Sustainably this Summer

How to Live more Sustainably this Summer

Who knew - we can live stylishly and sustainably this summer. We can fulfill our dreams of creating an à la mode living space, be the hosts-with-the-most and enjoy enviable holidays, all whilst being mindful of the planet we call home.

Who knew - we can live stylishly and sustainably this summer. We can fulfill our dreams of creating an à la mode living space, be the hosts-with-the-most and enjoy enviable holidays, all whilst being mindful of the planet we call home.

Read on for our top tips…

There are a few core pillars to sustainable living. The first is reducing what we are consuming in the first place. The second is looking at how we can repurpose, upcycle or responsibly dispose of things we may no longer want or need. And the third is being purposeful with our pennies and supporting brands and businesses that champion ethical and environment-friendly practices.

Let’s start with the principle of reduction. This means saying no to fast fashion, purchasing impulsively and buying things that are all the rage today, but you wouldn’t be seen dead with or wearing next month. Trend-relevant products have a very short shelf life. Combat throwaway culture and instead buy into the concept of slow fashion; long-lasting, high-quality garments that may cost a little more because they are produced fairly. Bonus points - shop second hand! This goes for homeware as well as clothing, look at second hand and antique pieces that have a vibrant history and story to tell from all the places they have been. Antiques are generally a lot more sustainable and durable than modern day furniture and have a much smaller carbon footprint.

What can we do with the things we currently have? The possibilities are endless! Pour a little hot water into a finished candle container to draw out the remaining wax and you’re left with a lovely little glass pot ready to become a makeup brush jar, a mini flower vase, office supplies organiser, plant pot, and more. Instead of throwing out unwanted clothing, practice your sewing skills and create cotton reusable makeup remover pads or fabric gift wrap. Tin cans can be given a lick of paint and become bird feeders, cutlers holders for al fresco dining, or punch some little holes in them and they can be the perfect lanterns to light up cosy evenings.

Voting with your wallet. This is all about spending in a way that is consistent with your values. Shop small, shop local, shop British, shop ethical, shop sustainable. We are proud to support businesses and brands that champion these values at Spirit of Summer Fair this year. What else can we do? We also know that plant-based is best for the Earth, so looking at adding more plants into our diet and investing in vegan fashion and homeware is a great conscious decision. Opt for soy wax candles which are better for us and the planet. Say goodbye to plastic where you can and hello to materials like bamboo, hemp and cork. Book your holidays with companies who offset their carbon footprint and offer breathtaking eco-resort getaways or donate a portion of their profits to local wildlife conservation, cleaning the ocean initiatives and more.

The most important thing to remember about trying to live more sustainably is that it’s ok to not get it right every time. Start off with small steps, and you’ll be surprised how easy it is to start thinking and acting more mindfully about purchase decisions, reconsidering before you throw something out, and whilst in the isles of the supermarket.

Love,
